Art Car: Day 1

Yesterday, David, Rachel, Sasha and I started working on our art car. Our first task was to get it into our workspace. We did this with no problem, but in doing so, we found out that the car doesn't reverse. Awesome.

We made a work bulletin board with a calendar and sketches. Please don't steal our amazing ideas. :)

We set up our tarp and started taping off where things will go on the car.

The last thing we did (and the thing I was most excited about) was testing different glues.

It did not go well.

ID

I am very excited to be curating the University of Houston photo/digital media senior show this year. The show is called ID and features 14 artists working with the theme of identity. It will run Apr 8- May 6 at Darke Gallery (320B Detering, Houston, 77007). The opening reception is Friday, Apr 8 from 6-9pm. Here's a sneak peek!

An Nguyen, still from A Butterfly Wade, Single-channel Video, 2010

Lillie Monstrum, Invention No. 19, Archival Inkjet Print, 10” x 15”, 2011
Max G. Trautner, Choice of Salad, Archival Inkjet Print, 15" x 19", 2010

They also got a billboard to advertise their show. It was written up on The Great God Pan is Dead.

Art Car

This year, Houston's art car parade will change weekends to correspond to the opening of the AAM conference that will take place in Houston. Thousands of curators and museum people will converge on Houston for the week. Because of this the AAM host committee has commissioned an art car to celebrate the diversity of Houston museums and my group got chosen. So, Sasha Dela, Rachel Hewlett, David McClain and I will be building a fabulous art car. Save the date for May 22 to see our creation.

Mission wrap-up

Two weekends ago I went down to Mission, TX for the Citrus Fiesta Parade to help David with his float. Here is our amazing finished product.

There were three floats that entered out category: Valley Products. The rules were basically that we had to cover out whole float with produce from the valley, especially citrus products. Here is the winner. It's the Catholic church...in Mission, TX. Shocking.

It was still super fun though. :)

Regarding Line

The drawing show I curated opens this Friday. I hung it last weekend and it looks amazing! It’s called Regarding Line and features the work of John Adelman, Brent Fogt and Kia Neil.

Viva Mission!

This weekend Rachel, Jane and I drove down to Mission, TX to help David build his second annual float for the Texas Citrus Fiesta parade. This year he is doing a train theme. It's a huge undertaking. David and his brother did a lot of contraction to make the train skeleton and Rachel, Jane and I will do most of the decorating. First though, we had to suit up. Coverall are so bad ass!

These are the wheels we made. We died deer corn and glued them to the pegboard wheels. They will actually spin when they are on the float.

We all got super gluey. I still have some red glue stuck on my arm.

Rachel also made a map that turned out super cute.

Here is the train while the roof was being put on.

The boys try to figure out how to make the train puff out smoke.

It was a super fun weekend. I can't wait to go back for the actual parade.

Check out David's blog to see more.
